Adia Ma

Studio Yun is an independent ceramic studio in Orewa, north of Tāmaki Makaurau, founded by Adia and Yuan, partners originally from China whose practices bring together hand-building and wheel-throwing.

Adia came to ceramics after studying in the UK and Switzerland and working in events and marketing across the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia. Exposure to different cultures and approaches to design shaped a perspective not tied to any single tradition. After settling in New Zealand, she taught herself ceramics through experimentation in her home studio. Since 2022, her work has received awards and finalist selections across New Zealand and was exhibited at 1000 Vases in Paris in 2024.

Yuan’s practice is grounded in tradition. Trained in Jingdezhen, China’s historic porcelain centre, he apprenticed under Master Yu, developing a disciplined approach to throwing, proportion and finishing.

In 2025, their practices came together as Studio Yun, combining experimentation with traditional ceramic knowledge. Every piece is built or thrown, glazed and fired in Orewa in small batches, using glazes developed in-studio. Their current Cloud collection celebrates subtle variations between individual pieces, creating functional objects designed to be used, lived with and kept.
