Craig Spencer is a New Zealand–born ceramicist based in Auckland, working across New Zealand and Australia. With over 20 years’ experience in interior design throughout Australasia and Singapore, his ceramic practice is grounded in a refined understanding of space, proportion, and materiality.
Since discovering ceramics in 2018, he has developed a distinctive body of wheel-thrown and slab-built work characterised by clean architectural lines and quiet restraint. His inspiration draws from both architecture and the natural environment — from modernist structures and built form to landscape, light, and organic texture. Rather than being defined by a single influence, his work evolves through accumulated experience, learned traditions, and an ongoing exploration of material.
Grounded in the natural qualities of clay, each piece balances precision with the visible trace of the maker’s hand. By bringing together contemporary design sensibilities with time-honoured techniques, Craig creates ceramic collections, art objects, and bespoke lighting for a variety of private clients as well as large international brands, including Aesop. His work is guided by craftsmanship, material integrity, and a genuine love of making, resulting in pieces that are purposeful, enduring, and harmonious within interior spaces.
