Hamish Campbell (Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga) is a Tāmaki based engineer, designer and creator of Kahurangi Studios; a cross-disciplinary studio exploring the intersection of art and engineering. Hamish is a mechanical engineer with expertise in product development and an affinity for industrial design, who weaves his technical experience with his Māori identity together with Kahurangi Studios.
Each piece is handcrafted from locally sourced and reclaimed materials, intended as heirlooms to be cared for and cherished across generations. Whakapapa is a design philosophy, whereby every material has a story, and brought together they form new relationships. By honouring the material whakapapa, the finished work carries greater mana as it continues the story of its ancestors.
Through Kahurangi Studios, Hamish creates turntables and accessories that celebrate whakapapa and materiality, where the supply chain is not only transparent but embraced as part of the design narrative. He envisions a world where humans engage in ongoing relationships with products, rather than seeing them simply as objects to be used, bought or sold.
