Hannah Rose Arnold is a multidisciplinary artist based in Pārāwai, Coromandel, where she works from a studio in the former convent. Her practice spans analogue and experimental photographic techniques, found materials, ceramics, installation and moving image, all grounded in a deep engagement with place, identity and the layered histories of Aotearoa. Arnold uses traditional film processes alongside alternative picture-making methods, often embracing chance and material unpredictability to reflect on the intersections of environment, memory, faith and trauma.
Originally from Tauranga, she graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Photography from Unitec Institute of Technology. Her work has been exhibited widely across New Zealand and Australia, and she has been recognised in major forums including the Australia New Zealand Photobook Award and the Wallace Art Awards. In 2023 she was the inaugural research resident in Tokyo through the Auckland Festival of Photography’s Kōwhai Residency, presenting her research internationally and deepening cross-cultural dialogue in her work.
Hannah’s art is a sensitive exploration of the New Zealand interior – its landscapes, people and ecosystems – infused with her lifelong curiosity about post-colonial histories and the human connection to the natural world. Influenced by her rambling Baptist upbringing and extensive travels, her evocative images and sculptural pieces invite reflection on belonging, loss and resilience.
