Ian Lawson is a woodturner and wood carver based in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa/Gisborne and Kirikiriroa/Hamilton, Aotearoa New Zealand. His practice is deeply shaped by a strong family legacy in woodworking, art, and arboriculture. Growing up in a creative household, Ian was inspired by his father’s skill as a wood machinist and woodturner and his mother’s artistic talent, influences that continue to inform his work today.
Ian’s approach balances tradition and innovation. He honours time-tested woodturning techniques passed down through generations while confidently exploring contemporary forms and finishes. This blend of heritage craftsmanship and modern experimentation allows him to create pieces that feel both grounded and fresh.
Working primarily with locally sourced timber – often from fallen trees – Ian emphasises sustainability and respect for the natural environment. His work celebrates the inherent beauty of wood, highlighting distinctive grain patterns, textures, and natural imperfections. His creations range from finely crafted functional ware such as bowls and vases to expressive artistic pieces
