Rebecca Asquith is a New Plymouth–based environmental craft artist and designer. With 25 years of experience in the film industry, she began her career as a model maker on The Lord of the Rings trilogy, later moving into set design on productions such as Avatar and Mulan, and most recently working as an assistant art director on the upcoming TV adaptation of East of Eden. This cinematic background informs her practice, bringing scale, precision, and narrative depth to her craft.
Alongside her film work, Asquith designs and makes furniture and lighting with a focus on sustainability, repairability, and minimal waste. Her work, exhibited in Milan, New York, Bangkok, and Australia, demonstrates a commitment to responsible design and ecological awareness.
She has also participated in collaborative art projects in Japan, Cambodia, Canada, and New Zealand, blending cross-cultural perspectives with eco-driven craft. Process-led and conceptually grounded, her practice is rooted in respect for the natural world.
A career highlight was designing and fabricating all the furniture for TwoFiftySeven, Wellington’s largest shared office space. Using salvaged materials from the former fit-out, she transformed 2x4s and old doors into new pieces, embedding history and sustainability into the workspace.
