Rick Struthers

Rick Struthers is an Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland-based furniture maker who has spent over 20 years developing his craft. After discovering a passion for woodworking in his final year of secondary school, encouraged by a supportive teacher, he went on to complete a furniture making apprenticeship.

Rick’s work draws on traditional techniques and the considered use of hand tools, which remain an important part of his process. His furniture takes inspiration from the Federal period, interpreted through a contemporary lens with an emphasis on elegance, proportion, and refined detail.

He particularly enjoys creating contrast through the use of different timbers and inlays, often working with species such as American cherry, maple, walnut, and ebony. Over the years he has produced a wide range of one-off pieces that reflect both traditional craftsmanship and a modern sensibility.
