Roy Duyndam

Roy Duyndam is a California-born, Aotearoa-raised furniture maker and designer based in Ōtautahi. After studying illustration at Whitman College in Washington, USA, he returned to NZ and apprenticed as a fabricator.

Now working as a qualified metal fabricator supporting the architectural and interior design industries, he launched Studio Thackeray in 2026 as an experimental outlet to create with unconventional methods free from client constraints.

His design practice focuses on celebrating the inherent beauty in metal through texture, raw finishes, and traditional forms. He draws inspiration from Japanese and American woodworking, aiming to apply the same grounded design language to metal objects. He works with steel, brass, and aluminium to create unique sculptural furniture pieces and homewares.

Particularly interested in tactility, his practice explores how weight, temperature, and texture can influence emotion. He designs, fabricates, and finishes each unique piece by hand.
